INAER operates the air means of the Secretaría General del Mar, five helicopters and three airplanes, which have a major role in the activities which are carried out to guarantee the law enforcement, both in Spain and Europe, on issues of conservation, protection and regulation of fishing resources in the national fishing grounds.
In 1992, the Secretaría General de Pesca Marítima (now Secretaría General de Mar) reporting to the Ministry of Environment, and Rural and Marine Affairs, began the work of inspection and air monitoring from Jerez Airport with the commissioning of the ALCOTAN I, the first helicopter to be dedicated to these tasks.
The aircraft which INAER operates for Fishing Surveillance are equipped with state-of-the-art devices such as search radar, optical and infra-red systems, digital cartography with data integration, and marine and cellular VHF communications (UMTS).
